Hennessy

Hennessy is the largest cognac house in the world and, for most Americans, the cognac. Founded in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish officer who settled in the Cognac region, it now sells more than any other producer by a wide margin. This page carries the core range from VS through XO, the limited-edition bottles Hennessy releases through the year, and the newer ready-to-drink cocktails. Everything here is in stock right now, from a $20 canned cocktail to $200 limited editions. We ship to most states, with an adult 21 or older required to sign at delivery.

Hennessy Price by Bottle

What a bottle of Hennessy costs depends on two things: the grade and the size. Current prices here:

Bottle Size Price
Hennessy VS 375ml $29.99
Hennessy VS 750ml $44.99
Hennessy VSOP Privilège flask 375ml $39.99
Hennessy VSOP 750ml $69.99
Hennessy XO 50ml from $26.99
Hennessy XO limited edition Full bottle $199.99

Two things worth noticing. The 750ml is the better buy on every grade if you'll finish it, since a VS 750 costs only half again what the 375 does for twice the cognac. And the limited-edition packaging isn't always the expensive option. The VSOP Mid Autumn Edition is currently priced below the standard VSOP 750ml, so if you're buying VSOP anyway it's worth a look. Prices move with sales, and the grid above always shows what they are today.

VS, VSOP and XO: What You're Paying For

The letters are cognac's age grades, and they're the reason the prices step up the way they do. VS means the youngest brandy in the blend has had at least two years in oak. VSOP means at least four. XO means at least ten.

Hennessy VS is the bottle behind most Hennessy and Coke orders, bright and a little hot, made to mix. Hennessy VSOP is rounder, with more vanilla and spice, and it's the grade that works both neat and in a cocktail. Hennessy XO is darker and heavier, with dried fruit and a long finish, and it's meant to be sipped. Each step is a genuine improvement, but the jump from VSOP to XO costs far more than the jump from VS to VSOP, so most people get the best value from VSOP.

How Hennessy Compares on Price

Hennessy isn't the cheapest cognac and it isn't the most expensive. At VSOP, it sits roughly level with D'ussé and about ten dollars above Rémy Martin, which is lighter and more floral. What the premium buys is consistency and a recognizable house style: rounder, oakier and spicier than most of its competitors. If you like that profile, it's worth paying for. If you've never tried the others, a half bottle of each is a cheap way to find out whether Hennessy is actually your house or just the one you know.

Limited Editions

Hennessy releases several special editions a year, tied to Lunar New Year, the Mid Autumn Festival and artist collaborations. They're usually the same blend as the standard bottle in new packaging, so you're paying for the design rather than different cognac. That makes them good gifts and poor value if you only care about what's in the glass. Current releases include the XO Lunar New Year edition by Xu Zhen and the VSOP Lunar New Year 2027. If you want a gift that comes ready to wrap, the VS shaker gift set is the least expensive way to do it.

Ready-to-Drink Hennessy

Hennessy now sells premixed cognac cocktails: Henny Berry, the Henny-Rita and an Iced Tea version. They won't replace a drink you build yourself, but they're convenient and priced like it. For the history of the house and what makes it cognac rather than generic brandy, our guides on what Hennessy is and whether Hennessy is cognac cover it.

Hennessy FAQ

How much is a bottle of Hennessy?

A 750ml Hennessy VS is around $45 here, and VSOP around $70. Full bottles of XO run around $200. Half bottles of VS and VSOP cost less, though the 750ml is better value per ounce.

What's the difference between Hennessy VS and VSOP?

Age. VS is aged at least two years and VSOP at least four. VSOP is smoother and rounder, while VS is brighter and better suited to mixing.

Is Hennessy cognac or brandy?

Both. Cognac is a type of brandy made under strict rules in the Cognac region of France. All Hennessy is cognac, which means it's also brandy.

What is the best way to drink Hennessy?

VS mixes well with cola or ginger ale. VSOP works neat, on the rocks or in a Sidecar. XO is best neat, in a tulip glass, at room temperature.

Why is Hennessy XO so expensive?

Every brandy in an XO blend has aged at least ten years, and some far longer. Long aging ties up stock for years and loses volume to evaporation, which drives the price.

Can Hennessy be shipped to my state?

We ship to most U.S. states, typically within a few business days. Someone 21 or older has to sign at delivery. Availability is confirmed at checkout, since a handful of states restrict direct spirits shipments.
