XO is cognac aged at least ten years, and it's where the spirit stops being a cocktail ingredient and becomes something you sit down with. The jump from VSOP to XO is the biggest step in the whole category, both in flavor and in price, so it's worth knowing what you're paying for before you buy. The selection here is small and deliberate, from a 50ml Hennessy XO for trying it to full bottles from D'ussé and De Luze. We ship to most states, with an adult 21 or older required to sign at delivery.

What XO Means

XO stands for Extra Old, and since 2018 it has meant that the youngest brandy in the blend spent at least ten years in French oak. Before that the minimum was six years, so an older bottle labeled XO may be younger than one made today. Like every cognac grade, ten years is the floor rather than the average. Most XO blends draw on brandies much older than that, some of them decades old.

The full ladder runs VS at two years, VSOP at four, Napoléon at six, XO at ten, and XXO at fourteen. XXO is the newest grade, created alongside the XO change, for the very oldest blends.

What Ten Years in Oak Does

Young cognac is bright, fruity and a little hot. Age rounds it off. With a decade or more in barrel, cognac develops what the trade calls rancio, a savory, nutty depth with notes of dried fruit, leather, mushroom and old wood that only comes with long aging. The texture gets heavier and the finish gets longer. Sweetness from the oak shifts from vanilla toward dried fig and toffee.

That complexity is the whole reason to buy XO, and it's also why you shouldn't mix it. Citrus, sugar and ice cover exactly the qualities the extra years paid for. If you want a cognac for a Sidecar, the VSOP shelf will serve you better for less money.

One thing the extra years don't continue to do is happen in the bottle. Cognac stops aging the moment it leaves the cask, so an XO kept for another decade is still the same XO. Store it upright, away from light and heat, and an opened bottle will hold its character for a year or more as long as it isn't left mostly empty.

What's on the Shelf

Hennessy XO. The XO most people picture, made from more than a hundred eaux-de-vie and darker and more spiced than most. We stock it in 50ml, which is a sensible way to find out whether XO is for you before committing to a full bottle. More of the range is in the Hennessy collection.

D'ussé XO. From the Château de Cognac, and bolder and spicier than the other houses. It's currently priced well below what XO usually costs, which makes it the obvious place to start with a full bottle.

De Luze XO. A quieter name than the big houses and a more traditional, fruit-led style. Worth buying if you'd rather judge a cognac on what's in the bottle than on the label.

Sazerac de Forge. Carries the name of the cognac the original Sazerac cocktail was built on in nineteenth century New Orleans, before phylloxera wiped out French vineyards and bartenders switched to rye.

Is XO Worth It

Sometimes. The aging is real and expensive, and a good XO is one of the most complex spirits you can buy. But much of what you pay for at the top of the market is packaging and house prestige rather than proportional quality. If you already enjoy VSOP neat, XO is the natural next step. If you mostly mix, it isn't. And if you're buying a gift, an XO from a respected house is hard to get wrong. XO Cognac FAQ

What does XO mean on cognac?

Extra Old. Since 2018 it means the youngest brandy in the blend has been aged at least ten years in French oak. Before 2018 the minimum was six years.

How is XO different from VSOP?

Age. VSOP is at least four years old, XO at least ten. XO is richer, rounder and more complex, with dried fruit and nutty notes, and is meant for sipping rather than mixing.

Is XO cognac worth the price?

If you drink cognac neat, often yes, since the extra aging adds real complexity. If you mainly mix cognac, a VSOP will give you better value.

How should you drink XO cognac?

Neat, in a tulip glass, at room temperature, warmed slightly in the hand. A drop of water can open it up. Ice and mixers cover the qualities that make XO worth buying.

What is the difference between XO and XXO?

XXO, or Extra Extra Old, requires at least fourteen years of aging compared with ten for XO. It's the newest cognac grade, created in 2018, and covers the oldest blends.

Can cognac be shipped to my state?

We ship to most U.S. states, typically within a few business days. Someone 21 or older has to sign at delivery. Availability is confirmed at checkout, since a handful of states restrict direct spirits shipments.
