The Macallan

Sort by:

The Macallan is a Speyside single malt built almost entirely around sherry-seasoned oak, and the cask is the brand. Most Scotch producers age in ex-bourbon barrels because they're cheap and plentiful. Macallan commissions its own casks, seasons them with sherry in Jerez, and shoulders a cost most distilleries won't, which is a large part of why the bottles are priced where they are. We carry the core age statements alongside the cask strength and limited releases, from around $100 up past $2,700. We ship to most states, with an adult 21 or older required to sign at delivery.

Double Cask or Sherry Oak

This is the decision most people are actually making, and almost nobody explains it. The two 12 year olds sit twenty dollars apart and taste noticeably different.

Double Cask 12 uses both American and European oak, both sherry-seasoned. American oak brings vanilla and a lighter sweetness, so the result is rounder and easier going.

Sherry Oak 12 uses European sherry-seasoned oak only. Drier, darker, more dried fruit and spice, and more obviously sherried.

Neither is the better whisky. Double Cask is the safer gift and the easier introduction; Sherry Oak is the one to buy if you already know you like sherry influence. The 15 Year Double Cask and 18 Year Sherry Oak continue each line upward.

Beyond the Age Statements

Classic Cut is the annual cask strength release, bottled at a higher proof than the core range and reformulated each year. It's the one that shows what the spirit is like before it's diluted to 43%.

The Harmony Collection releases are annual limited editions built around a theme, usually with packaging to match. They're bought as much for the box as the liquid, which is worth knowing before you compare the price to an age statement.

On Paying for Macallan

Macallan is the most collected and most speculated-on single malt in the world, and that pulls prices away from what's in the glass. Past the 18 Year, you're increasingly paying for scarcity, presentation and resale expectation rather than for a proportional step up in flavor.

That isn't an argument against buying it. It's an argument for being clear about which thing you're buying. If you want the whisky, the 12 and 15 year bottles are where the value sits. If you want the occasion or the gift, the upper range does that job well. For alternatives, single malt Scotch and Speyside have other sherried options at lower prices.

The Macallan FAQ

What makes The Macallan different from other Scotch?

Cask policy. Macallan commissions and sherry-seasons its own oak rather than buying ex-bourbon barrels, which drives both the dried fruit character and a large share of the cost.

What is the difference between Double Cask and Sherry Oak?

Double Cask uses American and European sherry-seasoned oak together, giving a rounder, sweeter result. Sherry Oak uses European oak only and comes out drier, darker and more spiced.

Which Macallan should I buy first?

The Double Cask 12. It's the least expensive entry to the range and the most forgiving, and it tells you whether you like sherry-matured whisky before you spend more.

Is The Macallan 18 worth the price?

If you want the whisky, the 15 delivers more per dollar. The 18 is a genuine step up in depth, but the gap in price is wider than the gap in quality.

Where is The Macallan made?

At Easter Elchies in Craigellachie, Speyside, in northeast Scotland. The distillery has been licensed since 1824, making it one of the older legal distilleries in the country.

Can Scotch be shipped to my state?

We ship to most U.S. states, typically within a few business days. Someone 21 or older has to sign at delivery. Availability is confirmed at checkout, since a handful of states restrict direct spirits shipments.
