Tequila - Añejo

Sort by:

Añejo tequila is tequila aged one to three years in oak. That single rule is what separates it from everything else on the agave shelf, and it's why añejo drinks closer to a whiskey than to the blanco most people started on. We carry 73 añejo bottles from just over 45 producers, starting around $35 and running past $500. Roughly two thirds are in stock at any given time, since the allocated and limited bottles move fast and don't always come back. We ship to most states, with an adult 21 or older required to sign at delivery.

What Makes a Tequila Añejo

The aging window is set by Mexican regulation, not by the producer. Añejo means one to three years in oak barrels of 600 liters or less. Under a year is reposado. Over three years is extra añejo. Bottles that are aged and then filtered clear are cristalino, which is its own thing and shelved separately.

What the oak does is add vanilla, caramel and baking spice on top of the cooked agave, and soften the pepper you get in a blanco. What it doesn't do is guarantee quality. Time in barrel can bury a good agave character as easily as it can frame it, and the better question is whether the wood is supporting the agave or covering for it. Check that the label says 100% agave before anything else. That's the floor, not a selling point.

Don Julio Añejo

Don Julio is the largest single block in this collection, with 13 añejo listings. Don Julio Añejo is the standard-bearer and the bottle most people mean when they search for it: eighteen months in American white oak, sweeter and rounder than the reposado. There's also a 10-pack of 50ml bottles if you want it for gifting or a party rather than a shelf.

Don Julio 1942 is the one that carries the name. It's aged at least two and a half years and priced well above the rest of the range, and how you feel about that depends on whether you're buying it to drink or to put on a table. The 375ml and the 50ml 10-pack are the sensible ways to try it first, and there's a FIFA World Cup 2026 edition in the same liquid if the bottle matters to you. Añejo Claro 70th Anniversary is an añejo filtered clear, so it drinks lighter than the color suggests.

Añejo Tequila by Price

Under $50 gets you a genuine añejo rather than a compromise. Corazón Añejo sits here and is aged in ex-bourbon barrels, which is worth knowing if you already drink whiskey.

Between $50 and $100 is where most of the collection lives and where the agave character usually holds up best against the oak. Adictivo Añejo and Adictivo Black are the volume sellers in this band.

Above $150 you're paying for scarcity, presentation, or both. Fortaleza Añejo is the exception worth the money on liquid alone, made in a small distillery that still uses a tahona. Dos Artes sits here too, in a hand-painted one-liter ceramic bottle that accounts for some of the price.

Prices move when bottles go on sale, so the grid above is the current answer. Browse top shelf tequila if you're shopping the upper end across all styles.

Añejo Tequila FAQ

What does añejo mean?

Añejo is Spanish for aged. In tequila it's a legal category: at least one year and no more than three in oak barrels of 600 liters or less, certified by Mexico's tequila regulator.

What's the difference between añejo and reposado?

Time in wood. Reposado rests two to twelve months, añejo one to three years. Añejo comes out darker, sweeter and more oak-driven, while reposado keeps more of the raw agave character.

Is añejo tequila good for margaritas?

It works, but you're paying for barrel character the lime and orange liqueur will mostly cover. Blanco or reposado makes a better margarita for less money. Save the añejo for sipping.

How much does Don Julio Añejo cost?

The 375ml usually runs in the low $30s, with 750ml and multi-packs higher. Don Julio 1942 is a different tier entirely. Current pricing is on each product page and changes when bottles go on sale.

How should I drink añejo tequila?

Neat, at room temperature, in a glass that narrows at the top. Skip the ice and the lime and salt, which are there to cover harshness that a decent añejo doesn't have.

Can tequila be shipped to my state?

We ship to most U.S. states, typically within a few business days. Someone 21 or older has to sign at delivery. Availability is confirmed at checkout, since a handful of states restrict direct spirits shipments.
