A bundle is two or more bottles sold together at a price you couldn't get buying them one at a time, and sometimes it's the only way to get one of the bottles at all. We run around 150 of them across bourbon, tequila, whiskey, champagne and cocktail kits, from a $24 multipack up to four-figure allocated pairings. The Four Kinds of Bundle
Allocated pairings. A hard-to-find bottle sold alongside something more available. This is how most allocated bourbon reaches shelves, and the bundle is often the only route to the bottle. The Weller 12 and E.H. Taylor pairing and the Blanton's and Eagle Rare bundle both work this way.
Brand flights. Several expressions from one producer, bought together so you can taste them against each other. The Buffalo Trace 6 pack and the Michter's bundle are the clearest examples, and they're a better way to learn a distillery than reading about it.
Cocktail kits. The spirit plus what you need to build the drink. The Buffalo Trace Old Fashioned bundle is the one people buy most, and there are tequila and cigar pairings alongside it.
Value multipacks. The same thing several times over, priced per bottle rather than per unit. Worth it for a party, less so for a shelf.
Bundles Built Around Allocated Bottles
Worth being straight about how this works. Distilleries release bottles like Pappy Van Winkle, Weller 12 and the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection in fixed quantities, split among retailers. Demand is far past supply, so almost nobody sells them as single bottles at shelf price. Bundling is the standard mechanism, and it's why an allocated bottle usually arrives attached to something else.
What that means for you is simple enough. Judge the bundle on whether you want everything in it, not just the headline bottle. If the second and third bottles are ones you'd have bought anyway, it's a good deal. If they aren't, work out what you're really paying for the bottle you came for.
Is a Bundle Actually Cheaper?
Usually, and it's easy to check. Every bundle page lists what's inside, so you can price the bottles individually on the site and compare. On brand flights and cocktail kits the saving is straightforward. On allocated pairings the comparison is murkier, because the single-bottle price you're comparing against often doesn't exist anywhere.
