John Walker started blending in Kilmarnock in 1820 to make what he sold taste the same from one bottle to the next, and the labels still work as a ladder: Red at the bottom, Blue at the top, several steps in between. The Johnnie Walker labels, explained
Red Label. No age statement, built for mixing. This is the bottle for highballs and whisky gingers, and it isn't trying to be anything else.
Black Label. Twelve years old, blended from around forty whiskies. It's the reference point for the whole range and the bottle most people mean when they say Johnnie Walker. Also available in 375ml.
Double Black. Black Label pushed toward smoke, using more heavily charred casks and a larger share of west coast and Islay malts. No age statement. Worth the step up if you like peat.
High Rye. A blended Scotch built around a high-rye grain whisky and aimed squarely at cocktails. Closer to an American profile than anything else in the lineup.
Green Label. Fifteen years, and the odd one out: a blended malt, so no grain whisky in it at all. Grassier and more malt-forward than the rest.
Gold Label Reserve. No age statement, softer and sweeter, leaning on honeyed Speyside malts. The easiest of the upper range to drink neat.
18 Year. An age-stated blend sitting between Gold and Blue, and the best argument in the range for paying up for age.
Blue Label. The flagship, blended from a small pool of older and rarer casks. It's priced on scarcity as much as on taste, and plenty of people prefer the 18 Year at a fraction of the cost. If you're curious rather than committed, the six-pack of 50ml bottles is the cheaper way to find out.
Which one to buy
If you're mixing, Red Label or High Rye does the job and there's no reason to spend more. If you're buying one bottle to drink neat and want to understand what the range is about, start with Black Label. From there the question is direction rather than quality: Double Black for smoke, Green Label for malt character, Gold Reserve for something softer. Age is where the price climbs fastest, and it doesn't map neatly onto enjoyment. The 18 Year is more whisky for the money than Blue Label is, which is worth knowing before you buy either. Is Johnnie Walker whisky or whiskey?
Whisky. Scotland, Canada and Japan spell it without the e, while the United States and Ireland use whiskey. Johnnie Walker is Scotch, so whisky is correct, though you'll see both spellings used online.
Is Johnnie Walker a single malt?
No. Most of the range is blended Scotch, meaning malt whisky combined with grain whisky. Green Label is the exception: it's a blended malt, made entirely from single malts with no grain whisky in it.
What's the difference between Black Label and Double Black?
Double Black uses more heavily charred casks and a larger proportion of smoky west coast malts, so it drinks darker and peatier. Black Label carries a 12 year age statement. Double Black does not.
Is Blue Label worth the price?
That depends on what you're buying it for. As a gift or an occasion bottle it's hard to beat on presentation. As a pour, the 18 Year delivers more for the money, and plenty of drinkers prefer it.
